Lucy Murrell

Lucy has fifteen years of experience working in early childhood education and care. She has worked in early childhood and school settings in Brisbane, Sydney and London giving her a breadth of experience in varying settings, ages, socio-cultural backgrounds, curriculums, pedagogical perspectives and government expectations.

Lucy has worked as a teacher, director, educational leader, student-teacher mentor and pedagogical advisor during her career. Lucy has a Master of Education (Early Years) with a literature focus on children as active citizens. She embeds children’s rights in her teaching with a particular focus on children’s right to have a say on matters that affect them. Lucy was privileged to be a finalist in the 2022 HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards for the category Advancing Pedagogy and Practice for her work empowering children and raising their voices on climate action. Lucy has explored topics such as gender equality, the Voice to Parliament referendum, children’s voice in digital documentation and children as digital citizens within play in her role as teacher. Lucy believes her role as a teacher, leader and coach is to work alongside people with curiosity and a willingness to always learn.

Lucy has stepped into the space of coaching and mentoring with a focus on people’s well-being as a passion emerged from her own journey of burnout within a system of pressure and regulation, that teaching should be joy. She believes that the point educators lose their joy in teaching is the beginning of their own story of burnout. Her mission is to return joy to teaching for the benefit of all involved in early childhood settings: educators, children, families, communities and the system itself.
